A CBC frequently opens a further question rather than closing one, and a doctor may well ask for it again later to see whether anything has shifted. Whether that is needed, and what any of it means, is a decision for the doctor treating the patient.

Who usually orders a CBC

Almost always, a doctor. A complete blood count turns up in routine health checks, in follow-up for people already under treatment, before a planned procedure, and when a doctor wants a general picture before deciding what to look at next. It is also commonly included in health screening packages.

• Share the request. Send a photo of the prescription or lab requisition, or simply tell us the test the doctor named.
• We confirm the details. The address with a landmark, a time window, the name and age of the person being tested, and any preparation the partner lab requires for the tests on the list.
• The collector visits. Identity is checked, the sample is drawn, and the tube is labelled in front of you before it leaves the room.
• Processing at an accredited partner lab. The sample is transported and handled under the process of that lab.
• The report comes back to you and should be taken to the doctor who ordered the test.

Children, older patients and difficult draws
