In plain terms, the panel looks at waste products the kidneys clear from the blood, and at some of the salts and minerals the kidneys help keep in balance.

Exactly which measurements are included varies with what the doctor has asked for and with the partner lab handling the sample. The requisition in your hand is the definitive list, not anything you read on a website.

Who usually orders a kidney function test

This panel is ordered by doctors, and typically during follow-up rather than out of nowhere. It appears in monitoring for people already under long-term treatment, in checks before or after certain procedures, in reviews for patients on medicines that a doctor wants to keep an eye on, and as part of broader health screening packages.

Varolyn does not advise anyone to have a kidney function test, and does not suggest how often to repeat it. How collection works at home

What actually happens, in order:

• You share the doctor’s request — a photo of the prescription or requisition on WhatsApp is enough.
• We confirm the visit — address with a landmark, time window, the name and age of the person being tested, and any preparation the partner lab requires, including whether fasting applies to the tests listed.
• The collector arrives, confirms identity against the requisition, draws the sample and labels it in front of you.
• The sample is processed by an accredited partner lab, under the transport and handling process of that lab.
• The report reaches you, and should go to the doctor who ordered the panel.

If a urine sample has also been asked for

Doctors sometimes pair a kidney function panel with a urine test. Varolyn’s home service is built around blood sample collection, so if the requisition includes a urine test, say so when you book. We will check with the partner lab whether it can be handled in the same visit, what container is needed, and how the sample must be collected and stored until it is picked up.

If it cannot be done in the same visit, we will tell you that rather than letting you discover it when the collector is already at the door. Occasionally the practical answer is that a walk-in collection centre is simpler for that particular test, and we will say so.

What to have ready before the visit

• The prescription or lab requisition for the panel.
• Photo identification for the person being tested, if the partner lab requires it.
• A chair or bedside with reasonable light, and a small table surface.
• A list of every medicine the person currently takes, to show the doctor along with the report.
• Any previous kidney function report, kept together with the new one for the doctor to compare.

What affects the cost

• Which accredited partner lab processes the sample.
• Your location in Bangalore and the travel involved.
• Whether a urine test or other samples are being collected alongside the blood sample.
• Whether the collection is a one-off or part of care already running at home.

Ask for the full amount and what it covers before you confirm. It should be a plain answer, given before the visit rather than after it.

Older parents and repeat testing
