What a liver function panel looks at

A liver function test, commonly written as LFT, is a group of blood measurements that together tell a doctor something about how the liver is working. In plain words, the panel looks at certain enzymes the liver releases, at proteins it makes, and at a pigment the liver processes. Which specific items are included depends on what the doctor asked for and on the partner lab handling the sample.

The panel does not, on its own, name a cause. That is why it is almost always ordered as one input among several rather than as a final answer.

Who usually orders a liver function test

Doctors do. An LFT commonly appears in general health screening packages, in monitoring for people on long-term medication where a doctor wants to keep watch, in follow-up for known conditions, and when a doctor is working through symptoms and wants more information before deciding anything.

Varolyn does not tell people they need a liver function test, and does not advise on how often to repeat one. If you are thinking about the test because of something you read or something a relative mentioned, a consultation is the better first step. A report with no doctor attached to it usually creates more worry than clarity.

How the home visit works

The process is the same as for any home blood collection we arrange:

• Send the request. A photo of the prescription or requisition on WhatsApp is usually all we need.
• We confirm the visit. Address with a landmark, a time window, the name and age of the person being tested, and any preparation the partner lab requires — including whether fasting applies to the tests listed.
• Collection at home. Identity is checked against the requisition, the sample is drawn and the tube is labelled in front of you.
• Processing at an accredited partner lab, under the handling and transport process of that lab.
• The report comes back to you and should go straight to the doctor who ordered it.

Before the collector arrives

• Keep the prescription or requisition to hand, and photo identification if the partner lab asks for it.
• Write down every medicine and supplement the person currently takes, including anything bought without a prescription, for the doctor to see with the report.
• Keep any earlier liver reports together with the new one so the doctor can compare.
• Set up a chair or bedside with decent light and a small surface for the collector.
• Have a family member present if the patient is elderly, frail or unwell.
• Keep your phone reachable in case the address needs a second call.

Do not change or skip any medicine before the test on your own judgement. If you think a medicine might affect the result, that is a question for the prescribing doctor, and it is worth asking before the sample is taken rather than after.

When a home test is the wrong call

A home blood test is for a stable person who has been asked to have a test. It is not for an emergency and not for an acutely unwell person. If someone is vomiting blood, is confused or unusually drowsy, has severe abdominal pain, or is visibly getting worse, do not spend the evening arranging a test — get them to a hospital. A sample collected tonight and a report read tomorrow will not help a person who needs to be seen now.

What affects the cost

No single figure would be honest here, because the same panel costs differently depending on how it is booked. What moves the number:

• Which tests are on the requisition, and whether the liver panel is standalone or part of a wider full-body checkup at home.
• Which accredited partner lab processes the sample.
• Your location in Bangalore and the travel to reach the address.
• Whether other samples are collected in the same visit rather than across separate visits.

Ask for the total, and ask whether the home visit charge is inside it, before you agree to the booking.

Reports, and what to do with them

The report is issued by the accredited partner lab that processed the sample and carries the name of that lab. Keep it with the earlier reports for the same person, in date order — a doctor learns more from a sequence than from one sheet, and in Bengaluru households these are easily scattered across different phones and drawers.
