Using it properly at home

A nebuliser works only as well as the technique behind it, so when we set the machine up we run a full session with whoever will be doing this.

• Wash your hands, then put in only the medication and volume the doctor prescribed. Do not add anything else to it.
• Sit the patient upright. Lying flat reduces how much of the mist reaches the lower airways.
• Use whichever of the mask or mouthpiece the treating doctor or nurse has advised for this patient.
• Keep the cup upright throughout. Tilting it spills the dose and stops the misting.
• Breathe normally and steadily rather than gasping — slow, quiet breaths carry the mist deeper.
• Run it until the misting stops, tapping the side of the cup to bring droplets down.
• Rinse the mouth afterwards if the prescribed medication calls for it.

The cleaning routine, in full

This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the part that matters most. A cup left damp with medication residue grows bacteria in a warm room, and the next session carries them straight into lungs that are already struggling, and none of it is visible.

• After every single use — take the cup apart, rinse the cup and the mouthpiece or mask under clean running water, and leave the parts on a clean dry cloth to air dry fully.
• Once a day — wash the same parts in warm soapy water, rinse until no soap is left, and air dry again.
• On the manufacturer’s schedule — disinfect the parts the way the booklet supplied with your machine describes.
• Never reassemble anything wet — trapped moisture is exactly what bacteria need. Dry first, store dry.
• Never share a cup, mask or mouthpiece between two people, even within one household.
• Keep water off the compressor — wipe the machine body with a dry or barely damp cloth only.
