Families are usually sent home with a Ryle's tube or PEG tube after a stroke, a head injury or a surgery that has affected swallowing — and given about ten minutes of instruction on the ward. It is a lot to absorb. Varolyn sends a trained nurse to manage feeds properly at home and to teach whoever will be doing it between visits.

What the nurse does

A nurse follows the treating doctor’s plan. She does not prescribe, change a plan or make a diagnosis. Anything that looks like deterioration is reported to the doctor the same day.

Teaching the family

Most families end up doing several feeds a day themselves, so being taught properly matters more than anything else on this page. Our nurse will take you through positioning, checking before a feed, the flush routine, how to recognise a blockage, and exactly which signs mean stop and call the doctor.

Never force a blocked tube. Stop, and contact the treating doctor or our coordinator. Forcing can dislodge or damage the tube.

When to call for help

Patients on tube feeding often need broader home nursing, and many are also bedridden and need positioning support.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ryle's tube feeding be managed at home?

Yes, and it commonly is. A trained nurse administers feeds to the doctor's or dietitian's regimen, cares for the tube, and teaches the family to manage feeds safely between visits.

What if the tube gets blocked?

Do not force it. Stop and contact the treating doctor or our coordinator. Regular flushing as instructed is what prevents most blockages in the first place.

Can you teach us to do the feeds ourselves?

Yes — most families do several feeds a day themselves. The nurse teaches positioning, pre-feed checks, the flush routine and the warning signs that mean stop and call the doctor. Where a family would rather not take it on, a 24-hour nurse at home can do the feeds.

Is PEG tube feeding also supported?

Yes. PEG feeding is supported in the same way, with additional attention to stoma site care.

Important: this page is general information about a service, not medical advice. Care is arranged to the treating doctor’s plan. Varolyn does not provide emergency services — in an emergency call 108 or go to the nearest hospital.

Need tube feeding support at home?

Share the feeding regimen from the hospital and we will arrange a nurse — and teach your family properly. If you want costs first, see our home nursing charges in Bangalore.
