Glucose is the sugar your body runs on, and a blood sugar test measures how much of it is in your blood at one moment. The confusion families run into is that there is no single ‘sugar test’ — there are several, they are taken under different conditions, and their numbers are not interchangeable.
These pages set out what each test measures and what the published figures actually say, including where the World Health Organization and the American Diabetes Association define things differently. Knowing which test produced a number is the first step to reading a report at all.
